Newsletter Feb 2013

Dear Friends -

It’s that time again. Welcome to another monthly newsletter full of important information and exciting news!  I got to say it last month but now I get to say it again: Happy (Chinese) New Year!  2013 is the year of the snake!

Chinese New Year Demonstrations

The word is out- CMAA is THE school associated with authentic Chinese Martial Arts.  Not only do we have the most qualified instructors (if I don’t say so myself;), we have an impressive young performance group!  Based on our previous performances at the Egg in 2012, SUNY Albany, RPI, Clifton Park Community Center, Schenectady Gazette Parade and more we are now inundated with requests by many local organizations and groups to showcase our rising talents!

In fact, I have had to turn down most of the requests to due time and scheduling constraints.  However, we will officially be organizing two demonstrations for the Chinese New Year!

Saturday, February 2nd Clifton Park Half Moon Library Chinese New Year Demo on February 2nd at 2:00pm.  Performers, please note that we will be meeting at the Library at 1:30pm!  We will leave from CMAA at 1:00 pm.  You are welcome to follow and drive over together or meet there separately.  Please double check and make sure you have your shirt, pants, shoes and staff/sword!  You are not expected to wear your sash during the demo.

Saturday February 9th The Chinese Community Center Chinese New Year Celebration at the Egg at 2:30pm.

Please enjoy a video of Dean and Shifu at last year’s demo at SUNY Albany.  http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=h-gFzyI7ibA

Class Cancelations:

Due to the times of the Chinese New Year demo’s mentioned above we will be canceling the following classes:

Sat, February 2nd: 1:00pm 13+ Kungfu, 2:00pm CrossFit.

Saturday February 9th: 12:00pm 8-12 Kungfu, 1:00pm 13+ Kungfu, and 2:00pm CrossFit.

Make up training times: For those interested in additional training, there will be an open/demo practice held at 4:15pm on Sunday Feb 3rd and Feb 10th!  If you’re Kungu Class was canceled that Saturday then you are welcome to join us that following Sunday!

School closing: March 11th, 12th and 13th.  Shifu will be taking a much needed vacation to visit his grandparents.  Stay tuned for an upcoming interview with Grandpa Geller at age 92 on the secrets of longevity! J

Kungfu

Kungfu basics and forms training make up a majority of our training. The warm up, flexibility training, basics practice, forms training and conditioning helps to develop all of the most important attributes of the martial artists which include power (strength, speed), flexibility, balance, coordination, and mental fortitude.

However, there is still much more to learn.  For students 13+ years old, or ranked green sash or higher we will be introducing a new element into our practice.

8pm Tues/Thurs evening classes will now include an additional 30 minutes (from 8-8:30pm) for qualified students to begin learning the most applicable techniques.  We will work a variety of kicking/punch drills on various types of padded equipment so that our students are better able to identify correct technique, accuracy, timing and application of power.  From self-defense, to self-confidence this new emphasis is sure to be an exciting and fun new element to our already awesome program!

Tai Chi:

By request, we will be addressing the Wednesday evening and Saturday morning schedule to include time for the practice of Yang Style Tai Chi basics, Yang 24, 32 Sword and the Shaolin Qi Gong form Yi Jin Jing!  For newer students to build a foundation, and for senior students to revisit the basics, our emphasis on some of the forms many of us started with will be a refreshing addition to our current course curriculum. More news to come!

February Challenge:

Virtuosity: performing the common uncommonly well.  Focus on this during your regular practice and you will learn the true meaning of Gongfu (Kungfu – Great skill acquired through hard work).  It doesn’t matter if you practice Kungfu, Tai Chi or CrossFit- focus on the basics!  The foundation isn’t just the basis for your future development, it defines your practice.  Read more here!

As always, lots of exciting things are happening right now.  Stay tuned for more great updates on what’s happening at CMAA in the year of the snake!

Monthly Challenge - February

February Challenge:

I've been talking about it for months now.  You may have heard my pizza analogy during class.  I've been really impressed with the kids ability to understand the fine points of the concept.  However, it's not just a lesson for kids or for new practitioners.  It's an ideal that anyone looking for mastery of anything needs to understand!

All too often Kungfu practitioners focus on the high flying jumps, Tai Ji students focus on developing powerful internal energy and CrossFit athletes look for rip hundreds of pounds of steel without properly developing the most basic techniques.  The front stretch kick and the horse stance for Kungfu students, Tai Ji walking basics and CrossFitter’s squat and deadlift form are what we learn on the first day of practice.  We are engrained with a linear learning pattern that allows us to believe that once we learn something we can progress to something more advanced.  This might take the form of a no handed cartwheel, a traditional long routine, or more complicated lift like the snatch or clean and jerk.  We forget that becoming great doesn’t mean doing more, it means doing things better – perfecting our skill.

I don’t just look at tornado kicks and shaolin monks meditating for inspiration. I see mastery in the head to toe front stretch kick, in a powerful golden rooster taiji posture and repping out air squats with perfect posture.

Remember, practice does not make perfect.  Perfect practice makes perfect.  Focus on the technical execution of “basic” skills and learn the true meaning of virtuosity.

The challenge for February is to identify the fundamental practices of your chosen discipline and concentrate on developing those key skills.  List the techniques and concentrate on bringing the ideal practice to the forefront of your consciousnesses during your training this month.  Focus on virtuosity and journey down your path towards towards mastery!

Dear Friends -

Happy New Year!  Wow, I can’t believe 2012 has come and gone.  CMAA has done so much this past year.  We’ve gone from 9 hours of class per week to over 30 hours of class per week in our wonderful new home!  We’ve done movie nights, pizza nights, demonstrations, parades, cultural galas, and sash tests.  With our Tai Chi group we’ve had a potluck, documentary showing, seminars with Master Sugiyama and more.

Newsletter - December

December Newsletter

Dear Students and Friends,

It’s December already!? I can’t believe it. With so many exciting things going on at the school time really seems to fly.

Dec. 1 - Kids Kungfu Movie and Pizza Night!

We had a great time at the Kids Kungfu Movie and Pizza Night! We started with a Kungfu class, and then moved on to games, pizza and a movie (Kids from Shaolin!). Whether you were able to join us this time or not we all hope you can make it next time! J

Dec. 2 - Sash Test

I am so proud of your progress!

The way you trained, organized yourselves, and performed on Sunday was VERY IMPRESSIVE.

Keep up the hard work! Congrats on your sash advancements!

Just one year ago we didn't have anyone sash test. We have moved to our own, new home just 3 months ago. This speaks to the infancy of our program. This is just the beginning.

You should be hugely proud of our progress as a school, and equally proud of your progress as martial artists! Congratulations!

Dec. 9th Kungfu Tai Chi Seminars – with visiting master Brandon Sugiyama!

It’s not too late to sign up!

Please sign up at the school or via email at AlbanyCMAA@gmail.com

Please note only 11:15-12pm Kungfu, and 2-3pm CrossFit classes will be held as regularly scheduled!

However, the monthly tuition fee is now only $60 a month (with annual agreement) and $90 monthly - no long term commitment!

CrossFit

CrossFit is officially being held Monday (7-8pm), Wednesdays (8-9pm), Friday (7-8pm) and now Saturdays (2-3pm)! Feel free to come watch a class and see what it’s all about!

Performances and Demo’s!

After an exciting and successful performance several months ago for the Chinese Cultural Gala CMAA has been invited to several other venues to showcase our rising talents!

Last month Price Chopper sponsored CMAA to participate in the 2012 Gazette Holiday Parade in Schenectady.

We have now been invited to perform at the Chinese School Performance, Clifton Park Halfmoon Library Chinese New Year Celebration and Chinese Community Center Chinese New Year Celebration! I am sure over the course of the next several months even more invitations will roll in (as they did last year from SUNY Albany and RPI!).

You should honored to be part of such a highly esteemed group. However, now is not the time for complacency. Now is time for preparation. Let’s get ready to show them just how hard we’ve been working. Let show them how good we are getting!

Monthly Challenge – December

Stay warm and stretch! When I first began training, I realized in the very first winter that I was always “tighter” and less flexible as the weather got colder. I began and finished my days with vigorous stretching routines, but I always felt like I couldn’t get loose. Shimu (teacher wife), Lu Yuzhi, told me to dress more warmly, and specifically, to start wearing long johns! In addition, when I injured my leg training in China my Chinese doctor in Beijing told me to keep my feet warm. For example, he told me no more going barefoot to the bathroom at night and to soak my feet in hot water every morning. For 15 years now, I’ve made morning/evening stretching and long johns/warm slippers during the winter part of my routine.

So, as the title suggests this challenge is two part. Take more time to stretch and keep warm! Personally, I dress warm at home (to the point of sweating during stretching even!) and take 5 – 20 minutes in morning with a cup of coffee, and 5 – 20 minutes at night after a warm shower to stretch everything back out! Keep it up throughout the winter and by the time the weather starts to warm up there’s a good chance your flexibility will increase dramatically!

CMAA Holiday Schedule!

Please note the following holiday class cancellations:

Monday, 25th – All classes canceled.

Tuesday, 26th- All classes canceled.

Monday, 31st – All classes canceled.

Brandon Sugiyama Seminar

Dear Students,

Kungfu and Tai Chi Seminars

He was introduced to martial arts at the University of Oregon Wushu Club as a freshman in college and went on to become coach his senior year. After graduation, Brandon moved to San Francisco to continue his training at Pacific Wushu Academy focussing on taijiquan and baguazhang with Zhang Hong Mei of the Beijing Wushu Team.

His competition record includes multiple All Around and Internal Grand Champion titles at tournaments across the country and he has represented the United States in competition at the World Wushu Games in Hong Kong, the 1st World Traditional Wushu Festival in China and the Pan-American Wushu Championships.

Brandon currently resides in Brooklyn and continues his training with Sifu Chen Ying. -- Don't miss this rare opportunity where Brandon will share his insight and philosophy developed over nearly two decades of training and competition experience. These seminars will focus on taiji and wushu basics and forms correction, as well as tips and tricks for mastering the progression from a beginner to an advanced martial artist. -- Competition Highlights: US Wushu Team, 1999, Hong Kong Internal Grand Champion, Wah Lum Kung Fu's Tournament 2000, Orlando, Florida, Internal Grand Champion, 2000 World Martial Arts Championship, Phoenix, AZ, Internal All Around Champion, 2001 USAWKF Nationals, San Diego, CA First Place, Tongji Bisai, 2003, Beijing Sports University Two time Gold Medalist, 2004, Pan American Wushu Championship Two time Gold Medalist, 2004 First World Traditional Wushu Festival, Zhengzhou, China

Parents- All students ranked White Sash and above are encouraged to attend the Kungfu seminar from 12-2pm. It’s a great chance to train with one of the most well-known and well respected martial arts competitor and judge in America! It’s sometimes hard to understand why this is important in the early stages of your child’s training, but having a USA team member for an instructor (ShifuJ), USA Team Coach Mario Martinez visit a few months ago, and now to have USA team member Brandon Sugiyama visit- CMAA is getting on the national kungfu scene radar very early. It’s a very important time for our young students to be exposed to elite national level martial arts and their critical eye. Having the highest quality instruction is one of the things that make CMAA so different than all the other schools locally- Please take advantage of these opportunities!

Monthly Challenge November

Learn how to squat, deadlift and overhead press correctly.

These three movements are largely ignored in the gym, even though they are the most important and functional movements that we encounter on a daily basis.  Misinformed personal trainers and the general public steer everyone away from learning how to do these movements correctly in the gym, without realizing that we do these exact same movements in real life all the time.  Every time you pick up a bag of groceries, put a heavy box on a shelf in the garage, or sit down to use the toilet- you do these movements!  Learn these movements and improve your ability to function correctly and safely- CrossFit can help (see above).

Latham CrossFit

It’s officially OFFICIAL- CMAA is now the home of Latham CrossFit!  If you’re not sure what CrossFit is (really? Still!?) keep reading! “CrossFit is the principal strength and conditioning program for many police academies and tactical operations teams, military special operations units, champion martial artists, and hundreds of other elite and professional athletes worldwide.

Our program delivers a fitness that is, by design, broad, general, and inclusive. Our specialty is not specializing. Combat, survival, many sports, and life reward this kind of fitness and, on average, punish the specialist.

The CrossFit program is designed for universal scalability making it the perfect application for any committed individual regardless of experience. We’ve used our same routines forelderly individuals with heart disease and cage fighters one month out from televised bouts. We scale load and intensity; we don’t change programs.

Thousands of athletes worldwide have followed our workouts posted daily on this site and distinguished themselves in combat, the streets, the ring, stadiums, gyms and homes.

-          Quoted from CrossFit.com

Workouts are typically short—20 minutes or less—and intense, demanding all-out physical exertion. They combine movements such as sprinting, rowing, climbing rope, weightlifting and carrying odd objects; they use barbells, dumbbells, gymnastics ring, pull-up bars, kettlebells, medicine balls, bodyweight exercises.

We will be updating the schedule to include new CrossFit training times.  Please note that NO other (Kungfu/Tai Chi) classes will be canceled or otherwise affected.
