The Benefits of Wushu

The Benefits of Wushu

Why do people practice Wushu (Chinese Martial Arts)? Do martial arts still serve a purpose in contemporary society? As someone who’s life has been so greatly affected by the martial arts it is easy for me to say ‘Yes’. While the purpose of training martial arts has changed, the benefits remain as numerous. Ask most Chinese about the benefits of training Wushu and you will most likely hear “Qiang Shen Jian Ti”- To make the body strong and healthy. In today’s day and age, children spend their entire day sitting in a classroom focused on their academic work. When they get home they might sit and watch tv, play video games, or work on the computer.

The saying goes, “If you love your job you will never work a day in your life.” It’s safe to say that Taconic Hills graduate Lucas Geller won't be punching the clock and dreading a day at the office anytime soon. Geller realized his passion for martial arts at an early age and by opening the Chinese Martial Arts Academy — in conjunction with Pil-Sung Martial Arts — on Wolf Road in Albany, he is now hoping to pass on to others the knowledge he’s accrued. The full-time instructor may be young at just 28 years old, but he’s acquired a vast wealth of knowledge of various forms of Kungfu. His journey in martial arts began when he was just 5 years old, studying in Kyukoshin Karate.

Passion to Profession

Passion to Profession

Chinese Martial Arts are the passion of my life.  It has shaped my interests, the course of my education and is now my full-time profession. Let me take you back a little - I began martial arts training when I was 5 years old. Eventually, I gave up martial arts for other more traditional sports like soccer and hockey.  One day, digging through a box of old toys, I found my old video collection.  I watched the action and the heroes who trained their bodies to avenge their masters and uphold justice with flying kicks.  Once again I became completely enthralled.  I just needed a Shifu (Master), and then, at age 13, I was ready.  That year I found Shifu’s Jiang Jianye and Lu Yuzhi at the Capital District Taiji and Kungfu Association of New York (CDTKA) in Albany.  It was at this time that I found my life’s passion- Wushu!

Everyone wants to know how they can improve their Wushu jump kicks. How can you get higher jump fronts, 720 tornado kicks, and an outside jump kick like Yuan Wenqing?  Well, the answer is two part:

1.  Train your jump kicks!  Listen to your coaches suggestions!  Having great technique is KEY

(And today’s topic, drum roll please!!!)

2.  GET EXPLOSIVE!  In addition to focusing on performing the kicks technically correct, increasing your explosive power and strength is incredibly important!
