Exciting New JKD Program Update
Believe me it’s bitter sweet for all us to say goodbye to the Juman family as they prepare for an exciting next chapter in their move to Florida!

CMAA’s Combatives (JKD/Kali) Instructor Steve Juman has been an incredible resource to the academy. I’ve always greatly admired your consistency, passion and dedication to both your art and class. Don’t think I ever told you/anyone but I’d say your approach to martial arts has shaped my ideas about martial arts to a large extent but specifically in regards to Taiji.

Beyond the skills and teaching methodology I’ve always appreciated your positive and easy going nature. Thank you for bringing such knowledge and energy to CMAA over the years. On a personal level I’ve always appreciated you as a friend and taken to heart your insight on subjects on marriage and family. Thanks for being a good listener, soundboard and friend. Wish you and the family all the best on your new adventure.

Now the Good News!

For our students and friends please know JKD/Kali at CMAA will continue! Same time, same place, with instructors Steve has vetted and vouched for. That’s right.  The local martial arts community is officially even stronger.  CMAA has allied with the Upstate Center for Marital Arts and will be bringing in great JKD/Kali instruction under George Brown and John Desorbo.  With this partnership CMAA will not only have the opportunity to continue with their training but even have opportunities through the Upstate Center for Martial Arts to expand their participation to other classes, seminars and even earn rank/certification!

Nov Class Schedule
To get the most updated version of our current class schedule please visit our live calendar!

https://martialartsalbany.sites.zenplanner.com/calendar.cfm

To ensure the safety of all students, we have revised our group class schedule to reduce the time of classes each day and to ensure there is a break between the classes. This is to minimize any potential overlap/contact among students and allow time for necessary clean-up between classes.

Classes will be offered in 2 different types:

1.Classes offered On Site w/ Online option (ex. Tai Chi) .

2. Classes On Site (ex. Kungfu, Tai Chi, Sanda Kickboxing, and Combatives).

Please note onsite classes require registration and have a 16 person maximum. Classes on ZOOM do not require registration and there is no capacity limit.

For ZOOM classes Tai Chi sign in information will remain the same:

FSK NORTH Kyokushin Karate Tournament Recap

Kumite- Fighting
Great experience fighting at the “We Fight On” tournament and training day.

First, I have to say “Thank You” to my wife Zoey for her encouragement and support.

Second, huge “OSU!” to Shihan Schenker and the Fighting Spirit Martial Arts & Fitness family. They were all very respectful and supportive. Checking in, offering to warm me up and corner me. Otherwise I was flying solo so it was nice to feel included. Very grateful to have such a supportive team willing to guide me in my first Kyokushin tournament experience!

Third, congrats to my opponent. We fought to a draw. I was clearly bigger and he never once backed down. By the end I was humbled by his fighting spirit!

Congrats to all who participated. It was eye opening. These guys all fought hard with technique, and SPIRIT!

Kata- Forms:
I came in last place.

25 years of hard, dedicated practice and I came in last place.
In addition to Kumite (Fighting), I also competed in Kata (forms) this past weekend. In 2009 after 10 years of hyper focused forms training I honestly, though Id never compete in forms again, yet I've done 3 forms competitions just this past year.

Practicing Karate has allowed me to enjoy forms again without the self critical mindset I have when practicing Wushu. So, I am thankful for that.

So, yea, I got last place this weekend. Thats OK. I'm used to being humbled regularly in my training, and I suppose thats one of the biggest lessons martial arts continually provides us.

As always there lots I can and will improve on. However, TBH I was actually pretty satisfied with my performance. It may have earned me last place but the performance was actually about what Id hoped for. Not my best, but def not my worst.

The top 3 were all students of my teacher as well, so I know I have the right guidance. Just more work to do.

Sincerely,

Humble and Hungry. OSU!

Which Wolf Will Win?
Came across this story while reading “The Champions Mind: How Great Athletes Think, Train, and Thrive” by Him Afremow.

Great reminder to practice your positive mindset: optimism, self talk, and gratitude.
