Bring a Friend to Kungfu!
Have a friend who you think would love Kungfu? Is there someone you know who you really want to see how awesome you are at martial arts? Bring them in to train with you on Thursday Dec. 19! If they decide to do a trial program and then sign up as a member you will both get a FREE CMAA sweatshirt!

Sash Test
We will be holding our quarterly Sash Test on Sunday, Jan 12th at 10:30am. If you are not sash testing you are still encouraged to come participate and support your teammates (no charge of course).

You know exactly what we will be testing but if you have any questions, check the Sash Requirements page on the website and feel free to clarify things with me during class.

If you are unsure whether or not you (or your child) are ready to test, please speak with me before or during class, via email at AlbanyCMAA@gmail.com or by phone (518) 755-7512.

Remember, you will not “get” your sash at CMAA – you will EARN it! There is a big difference. It’s important you (your child) learns the value of their sash- the value of hard work! Let’s stay focused and step up our training so we’re fully prepared for the test!

Kungfu Performances
The word is out- CMAA is THE school associated with authentic Chinese Martial Arts. Not only do we have the most qualified instructors (if I don’t say so myself, we have an impressive young performance group! Based on our previous performances at the Egg , SUNY Albany, RPI, Clifton Park Community Center and Library, Schenectady Gazette Parade and more, we are now inundated with requests by many local organizations and groups to showcase our school’s rising talents! In fact, I have had to turn down several of the requests due to time and scheduling constraints.

CMAA Performance Information:

Demo: The Chinese New Year Performance
 Date: Saturday, Jan 18th
 Time: 3pm
 Location: The Egg

For more information stay tuned for details!

For the Chinese New Year performance, all students ranked light brown and above are qualified to participate.  It’s a special opportunity to work with your team to put on an exciting performance, showcasing a spectacular aspect of Chinese culture in our local community, with the amazing stage, backdrop and production at The Egg! If you’re interested in participating, speak with Shifu about which performance would be most appropriate.  Aside, from The Egg’s Chinese New Year celebration, we do several other performances throughout the year, which may be appropriate for kids are different sash ranks.

Kungfu Black Belt Laura Prendergast
As an instructor it is my job to motivate my students.  It’s my job to set an example through past accomplishments and current efforts.  I should create an environment that encourages students to continually grow and develop.  However, I am very fortunate to have crossed paths with students who are even capable of motivating and inspiring me!  Laura is one of the students.  Her dedication and discipline are second to none and her personal perspective and approach has helped to forge a unique path in her marital arts journey.

Wushu, modern sport Kungfu, takes traditional Kungfu routines and then puts a Hollywood level twist to them.  We showcase the most spectacular elements of Chinese martial arts with low stances, high jump kicks, and lightning fast weapons handling. At the age of 53 while most of Laura’s contemporaries are finding every excuse to avoid physical activity and complaining about their bad back and bad knees, Laura is consistently showing up to her Kungfu school.  Any given night she’s going through the motions, stretching and running through Longfist basics (which for anyone who knows the sport are anything BUT “basic”).  She’s flying up and down the mat doing cartwheels and butterfly kicks.  However, its not only her passion, fortitude and ability to grind that inspire me, it’s also her genuine happiness in seeing others succeed.  She is able to look around her and see the feats of her instructors, adult and child classmates and wholeheartedly draw joy and inspiration from them.  I will often hear her comment, “Wow, look at his flexibility”, “That was amazing!”, or say to me “I am really impressed their improvement” referring to someone she’s noticed working hard.  I think it’s a truly wonderful quality to positively recognize the success of others and channel that into our own efforts to improve.

Martial arts are my life, they are my passion and I am very grateful to have crossed paths with Laura on my martial arts journey.  Through her actions, she reminds me regularly that there are no good excuses, to stay dedicated to your passions and dreams and to recognize and encourage the success of others.  Thank you for your continued inspiration Laura and congratulations on earning your black belt!  You truly deserve it.

Kungfu Iron Palm Seminar
Iron Palm or Iron Hand (Chinese: 铁掌功) is a body of training techniques in various Chinese martial arts. It is originally one of the 72 arts of the Shaolin temple. These conditioning techniques are typically meant to condition the hands to allow a practitioner to deliver very powerful blows without injury to his or her hands. Interested in learning more? Stay tuned for an Iron Palm seminar at CMAA! Stay tuned for details!
