SCHOOL CLOSINGS
We will be closed Monday and Tuesday Dec.24th and Dec.25th.

Schedule Changes!

Tai Chi!

CMAA will be introducing a NEW 8 week beginner Tai Chi class on Wednesday morning from 9-9:45am.  This class will start on Wednesday, February 6th.  This class will focus on gentle movements that introduce new practitioners to fundamental Tai Chi movements and concepts.

Upon completion of our 6 week intro course, students may choose to either transition to our regular Tai Chi classes offered at various times throughout the week (Tues/Thurs/Sat 9am or Wednesday evening), or re-enroll in the 6 week program and continue to focus on just the essentials. Please email or call to register if you are interested.  The cost is $67.50/month.

Due to low attendance we will be suspending our Thursday evening Tai Chi class.

Exciting Class Series!

Thursday Evening 6-7pm:

CMAA will be introducing a new rotational class series on Thursday evenings from 6-7pm.  The series may include 1 day seminar specials or a series of classes for up to 6 weeks in a variety of courses including: Iron Palm, Chinese Calligraphy, Breakdancing, Wing Chun, Yoga, Fencing, Bully Proof, Self-Defense, Chinese Dance, Wrestling, or competition/demo team preparation.

For our first Thursday class we will be focusing on our preparation for our Chinese New Year performance.  The practice will be held for performers (ranked light brown and above) who are participating in this year’s demo.  If you are qualified and interested, please speak with Shifu about showcasing your talents with our team on stage!  Stay tuned for details in next months newsletter to find out about our next class series!

Kungfu Sash Test

Students must arrive on time and be in full uniform to participate.  Students who arrive late or out of uniform will be required to complete a makeup test.

We will be holding our quarterly Sash Test on Sunday, Jan 13th at 10:30am. If you are not sash testing you are still encouraged to come participate and support your teammates (no charge of course).

You know exactly what we will be testing but if you have any questions, check the Sash Requirements page on the website and feel free to clarify things with me during class.

If you are unsure whether or not you (or your child) are ready to test, please speak with me before or during class, via email at AlbanyCMAA@gmail.com or by phone (518) 755-7512.

Remember, you will not “get” your sash at CMAA – you will EARN it! There is a big difference. It’s important you (your child) learns the value of their sash- the value of hard work! Let’s stay focused and step up our training so we’re fully prepared for the test!

White/Yellow/Green/Blue: $25
Red/Purple/Orange: $50
Light Brown/Dark Brown/Gold: $75
Black: $100

Harvard Medical School: Tai Chi Winner at Warding Off Falls
Exercising is one of the best ways to ward off falls. But which type of exercise helps most? A small randomized controlled trial — the gold standard in research — found that tai chi is the winner. The study was published online Sept. 10, 2018, by JAMA Internal Medicine. Researchers took 670 older adults (average age 78) with a self-reported history of falls or mobility problems and divided them randomly into three groups. One group did tai chi only; one group did stretching exercises only; and one group did aerobics, strength training, and balance and flexibility exercises. All of the participants took part in their assigned activities twice a week, for an hour each time. After six months, people in the tai chi group had experienced 58% fewer falls compared with people in the stretching group, and 31% fewer falls compared with people in the group doing several types of exercises. The type of tai chi in the trial was tailored to older adults at risk for falling. But lots of evidence has shown tai chi in general is effective for improving balance. It uses a series of slow, flowing motions and deep breathing. The gradual shifting of weight boosts your strength, flexibility, range of motion, and reflexes.” Full article here:
